These cars can slip out of park into reverse and take off and as has happened before and kill people. If you park this car make sure you swing the wheel to the right. The clicking noise was the park pawl skipping across the trans locking gear.( not engaged ).Ĥ. If your in park and your left hand is firmly on the wheel and you pull the gear lever towards you firmly the the column will unlock and swing away.ģ. Take the coil lead off so engine won't start and turn starter key, slide NSS till you make contact.Ģ. It has two screws that you loosen off and slide the NSS till you make contact. ![]() If the gear linkage is good then try adjusting NSS. If it starts then you have worn linkage or worn detent in the steering column. Try lifting the gear lever in park and try starting. The problem you have has been experienced by just about all Thunderbird owners.ġ. If your son truly loves Thunderbirds then reading the manuals he will become an expert. I am sure Alan will chime in with a list of manuals you should purchase. does that sound right to anyone else? I was able to start the car by jumping the starter, so I have that going for me right now.ĭon't know much about the Neutral switch. After reading a few other posts on here I feel it may be the neutral switch. The car rolls in neutral and locks in park. My initial thought was the Transmission was some how stuck in a dead zone and would not let it start as it was partially in gear. After stopping a foot or so later (Breaks are almost none existent with no power) and putting it in park it would not start. I heard a clicking sound, like it was still half in gear. Yesterday in a haste I was playing the 3 car shuffle in the driveway and did not let it warm up proper, while moving it stalled and as I shifted it to park the steering column shifted to the right and the car rolled a bit. ![]() It is in great shape and just needs some TLC. ![]() It has been parked around the corner from our house for past 6 years. I recently bought this car for my son and I to work on for his first car, he just turned 16 and has always loved this Thunderbird. ![]()
